Description
The craftsman has valued this work at $450.00. This very large bowl has been turned from a very rare exotic wood, Gleditisa japonica, syn. Gledistsia melanacantha, Japanese locust. The bowl measures 14-3/4” wide x 5-1/4” high. The rim is 3/8” wide.
Darts Hill Garden Park once contained this rare Gleditsia japonica, native to Japan. The tree, which grew in the former C beds, died, but a significant chunk of the trunk has found new life. It has been turned into a spectacular bowl by craftsman Bryan Whitta, of Surrey BC., a member of the Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild (FVWG). The bowl, with the Gleditsia trees’ beautiful annual growth rings highlighted, is an outstanding piece of functional art.
