Artist in Residence – Nickie Lewis

Nickie Lewis is an artist residing on the unceded lands of the Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam first nations people, also known as Burnaby B.C.. She specializes in eco-friendly art created entirely out of natural organic materials such as cedar sticks, moss, jute twine, and yard waste. She endeavors to spread joy through her magical, whimsical sculptures, while inviting viewers to get outside and admire the art of nature, and to engage with the world around them. Her works can be found in, city parks, businesses, galleries, private residences, and schools. Her most recent projects include a large scale installation for Lunar Fest in Feb. of 2024, a large installation in the Lumiere festival in October of 2023, a 12 sculpture project for the city of New Westminster for their “Shine Bright” display, She had her most recent solo exhibit at the PoMo Arts Center , and has received 4 ArtStarts Artist in Residence at various elementary and Secondary schools in the lower mainland.

Nickie will create a total of 2 medium sized “Anxiety monsters”  from natural materials found in the garden ( and other biodegradable materials ) with the community’s help.  Portions of this project will become a part of her upcoming collection of creatures called “If only those voices were kinder”. This collection speaks to the negative thoughts that sabotage our pursuits of joy and fulfillment in life.
